Background

With the growth of Walmart  stores accross the US came the growth of the distribution centers as well. Due to this growth, Walmart was in need of a modular, scalable, cloud based web software application which could help internal engineers update and manage all 260,000 printers across all stores and DC's from a single user interface.

I was the sole UI/UX designer for the MDM team

I joined Walmart Corporate as a UI/UX Designer and helped lead the product and UI and UX strategy for a small team of 5 engineers. I've been extremely fortunate to be a part of this journey to design and build such a momumental application for Walmart. Here are some key achievements listed below:

Turned an idea into a product.

The ability to transform an idea into something more tangible is a process that is both exhiliarating and rewarding. During my time at Walmart I took notes, created user flows and user stories which I then used to create task cards in jira. Once all cards were created I created a basic interactive wireframe and presented to the team. Once the team decided upon a flow, I then used Figma to design the UI as well as presentation deck's which I used to present to leadership to nail down the final look and feel.

Wore many different hats.

I dedicated many hours of my time on weekends conducting research, sketching, testing and designing the product as well as working with the lead developer and the product owner to fully understand the scope of the project and the technology that would be used. My product owner fell ill after the first month so I had to step-up and lead the development team until he could return. I helped guide the developers and if there was pushback I was able to work with each developer to achieve their projected end goal.

Pitched to large teams and leadership.

As well as designing the UI and UX, I also presented the concept art to different teams and leadership to gain valuable feedback. Management absolutely loved the research, documentation, wireframes, UI designs and the UX flow of the entire web application. We were on the right track.

This is an initial image of UI design showing dashboard displaying a list of printers
Leadership loved the design but needed to be able to search printer grouping from within the sidebar
Collapsed sidebar to increase data table real estate
Added data visualization charts and graphs
Leadership asked for a known issues page where engineers could go to update known issue devices quickly
Firmware can be updated between many devices on a single screen
Firmware updates could be grouped
Firmware groups can be scheduled or terminated
